Contemporary dance starts with a base of traditional modern/jazz movement. A grab bag of elements such as lyrical, ballet, martial arts, hip-hop, and everyday pedestrian movement then gets mixed in, creating a new style with a “contemporary” feel. Contemporary dance provokes, expresses, and reflects through movement the point of view of the dancer and/or choreographer.

Modern is a form of contemporary theatrical and concert dance employing a special technique for developing the use of the entire body in movements expressive of abstract ideas.

Modern is a dance language that involves elements such as posture, use of the body’s weight, and the character of movements (sinuous, angular, and so forth)—as well as specific movements of the head, torso, hands, arms, legs, and feet.
